De Amsterdamse beeldhouwer Huub Holthuizen maakt bronzen plastieken waarbij het menselijk lichaam als uitgangspunt dient.

Hij varieert in de vorm van torso’s eindeloos op het thema van het contraposto dat sinds de klassieke stijl van Pericles het gebeeldhouwde lichaam door een gracieuze draaiing tot bezieling brengt. Met een zorgvuldige gewichtsverdeling weet hij een asymmetrische harmonie te bereiken die zijn oorsprong vindt in het klassieke ideaal van menselijke schoonheid.

Maar er is meer aan de hand. Holthuizen stileert zijn figuren tot aan de rand van het herkenbare. Met een geraffineerde lijnvoering en contrasten tussen vlak en rond weet hij een grote spanning op te roepen. Het is niet alleen de delicate balans die indruk maakt maar vooral de innerlijke samenhang tussen de lineaire en picturale kwaliteit van zijn werk.

The Amsterdam sculptor Huub Holthuizen recieved his training at the Academy for Visual Arts in Amersfoort and at the teacher training at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam.

He creates bronzes in which the human body serves as a starting point. Using the torso he varies endlessly on the theme of the contra-posto which, since the classical style of Pericles, inspires the sculptured body by an elegant twist. The asymmetrical harmony, which originates from the classical ideal of the human aestetics, is accomplished by a carefull weigh distribution.

But he does not stop there. Holthuizen styles his figures to the limits of the familiar. He arouses big suspension by a subtile use of lines and a contrast between flat and curved planes. It is not only the delicate balance which is impressive but most of all the connection between the linear and the expressive quality of his work.
